“Fever” is a word used across cultures and generations. You give me fever, dancing fever, oh no you’ve got a fever..
Beyond the flush of excitement from a word or look from your crush, it can also your body’s nuclear option to eradicate a stubborn germ or virus. To this end, some cultures fear it, ‘oh-my-God-I-need-medication!’ Others cultures revere, ‘hooray-my-body-is-working!’
It’s a small thing, but having one too long or too high can be dangerous, even deadly,
So, in the spirit of the wordplays The Fever, like so many “little things” might deserve some attention. Maybe there’s a secret message from the Universe?
So if Fever is Fire, let’s quick back to Water and “The Flood”
(Especially when things are getting crazy in the World)
The days of Noah were fraught with widespread injustice and violence (different from today?) so God unleashed a global shutdown–no, not Covid. A massive 40 day onslaught of water.
(I can barely handle two days of rain.)
But, as a sign of friendship and like a wedding ring promise God gave a rainbow reminding us *S/He/Love would never obliterate the earth again. At least not with water.
In later biblical books, we read Fire is the final end all, be all.
A bit dramatic, Jas? Maybe, but note:
Heat. One letter short of Heart.
Fire purifies. You want to eat that meat raw?
When I was a kid whenever I had a splinter, my mother would use the old school method of needle burned first in a lighter to make sure the needle had no bacteria on it. This technique was a small act, but instinctive for destroying anything on that needle that might want to invade my already broken skin.
When I got older and had children of my own, I noticed something peculiar when wiping the dark ash off the needle”
So heat can purify instruments, food, be used in our bodies to end an internal war. I even saw a programme where bees gather en mass to smother an invading wasp with their body heat.
What about Heat in a world where things are on fire?
Wars, rumors of wars, social injustice, no rest, no peace… Bible prophecies foretell an end to the darkest chapters of our human autobiography. Oppression, greed, corruption, hypocrisy, even sighing is expressly noted.
But the build-up to that crescendo may involve more suffering, more oppression, more wars, more famines, more earthquakes,.. and some stuff so crazy I wrote a book for those wanting nothing to do with the “Bible,” “God,” and certainly not “Christians.” #BTDT.
The Heat we love because it keeps us warm, the cozy fireside, the closeness of a friend or lover, anticipation, a rush, may also flag a visceral slaughter everything Wrong in this world.
And a “Fever” on a global scale may mean the stories are true, and we are not alone in this world, deeply loved, deeply connected.
You give me Fever.
I’ve got a fever.
Fevahh
If things keep getting crazy in this world, keep hope.. Just like the sign of the rainbow, or how an oil slick leaves a rainbow swirl, or how a charred needle reveals a rainbow when wiped…hope in the unseen other side of the story.
Because that’s what a fever was meant to do.
In the in between time, let’s go dancing. 😉

*Btw, I sometimes use “He” as a pronoun for God, but fully recognize God with male/female “identity” (for lack of a better word), as demonstrated in Genesis 1:27, expressed throughout the bible, and evidenced by humanity. See two-part post: Transgender God for more.
