Independence Day… reminder of freedom in America from Tyranny, Oppression, Dictatorship…
“E Pluribus Unum” or, “Out of Many, One” (traditional motto of the US).
Yes, America has come a long way, but yesterday I saw tanks lined up for the Celebration??! I’ve been American my whole life and never recall this happening before.
Only images from China or North Korea, maybe Russia. July 4th is an American occasion for solidarity and lightness. Picnics, fireworks and fun a day. But displays of military might?? A tawdry TV moment?
Are we just measuring d*’s now??
Since when did America ever have to prove itself? When did any of us? (tweet)
The Armed Forces are too Honorable to be a “show.” Their foundation is sacrifice and blood, Service Members sign open checks to be paid, if necessary, with their lives…
So here’s my reflection this Independence Day, especially for those identifying as “Christian” in America:
God identified more with a Dove than the Eagle.
Do you remember when Jesus got baptized? The Holy Spirit descended, not like a glorious Eagle, but a humble little dove.
Famed members of the Pigeon family, they appear more like witless birds just barely getting out of the way in traffic. In NYC they’re fondly known as “rats with wings.”
Simple, humble creatures. Not showy like Peacocks or stately like Eagles…
If our Celebration of peace and unity becomes a mere show of Warpower and might, Remember this: God identified with the lowly and humble.
How much more frightening is that #familyseparation policy now?
After all, God said: “As much as you did for the least of these, you did for Me” (Matthew 25:40).
If the God Almighty, the arguable King of Kings, doesnt thump *his chest or swag (“Love doesn’t boast, is not puffed up”), but instead associates with the weak and downtrodden, how ridiculous is it for mortal man to self-aggrandize?
Look out America, you “One Nation Under God” – let your Liberation Day be truly for All.
